Justice Cobb Named Woman of the Year

As a student at the W, she was known as Kay Beevers. She graduated in 1963 and will return to campus Oct. 18 to accept the annual Woman of the Year Award.

The Honorable Kay Beevers Cobb is the former presiding justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court. Justice Cobb retired from the bench in May. "When I think of the thousands of bright, accomplished and wonderful 'W' alums in our Long Blue Line,” said Justice Cobb, “I am absolutely overwhelmed to be the one selected for this honor."

The Leadership Banquet and Award The Woman of the Year award was initiated in 2004 to honor MUW alumnae who have provided significant, positive recognition and service to their alma mater, while advancing the status of women in Mississippi and the region.

"As I look to the future, I pledge my continued support and allegiance to this very special university,” Justice Cobb said. "The W has played a major role in preparing me for the life of service which has unfolded before me over the last 44 years.

"It is my challenge to each of you to join in continuing efforts to make her even stronger and better for the wonderful women - and smart men, too - who follow us."

Tickets for the Friday luncheon banquet are available for sale through the Southern Women’s Institute, and at the door, but banquet planners request that a reservation be made by phone or email (contact information below) by Oct. 10.

The presentation will take place in the Mary Ellen Weathersby Pope Banquet Room in Hogarth Dining Center. The banquet is co-sponsored by The Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship, a campus center which is directed by Lucy Betcher, and funded by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
