MUW Garduate Julie Hussey Receives Award. Donates It to Patsy McDaniel Scholarship Fund

Julie L. Hussey (B.S. '95) was recently named as a recipient of a 2008 Pro Bono Award, one of only five awarded nationally, by global legal services firm DLA Piper. With more than 3,700 lawyers in 64 offices in 25 countries, DLA Piper represents local, national and global companies, from emerging businesses to some of the leading national and multinational companies.

The award carried with it a $3,000 grant which Julie donated to the Patsy McDaniel Scholarship fund at MUW. McDaniel served as alumnae director for many years.

Pro Bono awardees met certain criteria, including the amount and quality of pro bono work accomplished, the difficulty in achieving a positive result, the courage involved in taking the work and the positive impact of the work on the client, community, candidate, and firm.

Julie's Pro Bono award-winning work focused on representing the national board of directors for the Mississippi University for Women Alumnae Association (MUWAA) in litigation against Mississippi University for Women, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning and University President after disaffiliation of the historic Alumnae Association. Her work resulted in a permanent injunction after bench trial. Julie also supervised and handled several Federal Emergency Management Agency appellate negotiations and case evaluations for victims of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.

Julie earned a B.S. from the W in 1995 and received her J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1999. While at the University of Alabama, she served as the Lead Articles Editor for The Journal of the Legal Profession. Julie has also completed Comparative Federalism Study at The University of Fribourg School of Law in Switzerland. She joined DLA Piper in 2005, and was promoted to partner status in 2008.
