MISSISSIPPI'S FIRST ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
PLANS WORK & PLAY FOR HOMECOMING
By Thomas "Mack" Spencer, '97
This has been a year of firsts for Mississippi’s First Alumnae Association, the original and historic alumnae and alumni association, and Homecoming will reflect that with a full schedule of events designed to mix business with pleasure all weekend long.
Though no longer affiliated and operating under a new name, Mississippi’s First Alumnae Association will commemorate the university’s 125th anniversary and the association’s 120th anniversary during Homecoming 2009. The ratification of the association’s name change is just one of the big events the association has planned for Homecoming weekend, April 17-18 in Columbus.
Business Meetings
The organization name change ratification vote, as well as the installation of the first class of officers elected using the new electronic voting system and the annual Alumnae/i Achievement Awards presentation, are slated for the organization’s annual business meeting, Saturday at 11:15 a.m. at the MUW Wesley Foundation, across 11th Avenue from campus.
The Board of Directors’ spring meeting, in preparation for Saturday’s passing of the gavel, will be held on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., also at the Wesley. Both meetings are open to all members of the Alumnae Association, whether general (unpaid) or activated (dues-paying).
Don’t think the weekend is all serious business, though. The MFAeA has become known for throwing a party, and there are several planned through the weekend.
Fun times
Friday night, the Alumnae Association will throw its 125th anniversary bash honoring the W at the Stephen D. Lee Home on Seventh Avenue North. This event will also recognize the Alumnae/i Achievement Award winners.
All alums and guests are welcome to attend the Friday 8-10 p.m. event. There is no charge as the event is being underwritten by alumnae/i sponsors.
Saturday night, for the first time Alumnae Association takes on the sponsorship of the popular Karaoke Party at Zachary’s on Fifth Street North. Formerly sponsored by the university, the Karaoke Party will again feature alum Tina Morgan’s special selection of get-down, fun-time music to sing along with.
