Special Events - Welty Weekend October 22-24, 2009
In addition to all the fine presentations by Welty Symposium authors throughout the weekend and our MFAeA Board meeting on Saturday, there are other special events scheduled for Welty Weekend that you won’t want to miss.
Friday Evening
5:30-7:30 - the MUW Department of Art and Design will host an opening reception for the exhibit "Figurative Paintings and Drawings by Terry Strickland" in the Eugenia Summer Gallery.
Ms. Strickland is a contemporary figurative artist from Birmingham, Alabama, whose work has received wide recognition, including most recently for her paintings, "The Ascent," a finalist in the Favorite Subjects Competition 2009 in International Artist Magazine, "Shahrazad Illuminated," which received an Art Renewal Center Staff Award in the online competition, and "Plan of Attack," which was named a finalist in the ARC International 2008-2009 Salon. Her exhibit will be on display at MUW from October 8 through November 4.
7:30 - Following the art reception at 7:30 p.m. in Cromwell Theatre, the MUW Department of Music and Theatre will present an open rehearsal of an upcoming production featuring work by acclaimed writer Horton Foote. Foote, who is best known for his screenplays To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies, was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in drama for his 1995 play, The Young Man from Atlanta. Opening night for the production is scheduled the following week, but Symposium participants are offered this opportunity to catch a sneak-peek performance.
8:30 - The grand finale on Friday evening will be the MFAeA's Champagne and Chocolates Gala Celebration of the 21st annual Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium at the Lee Home. The celebration, which will begin at 8:30 immediately following the theater presentation, will honor the symposium authors and the faculty of Mississippi University for Women. All authors, faculty members, alumni, friends, and guests are invited to join in the celebration. The Lee Home is located at 316 7th Street North in Columbus.
Saturday - On Saturday, we will have one last opportunity to spend time getting to know the symposium authors. The symposium chairman, Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, has planned a box lunch picnic at noon on the lawn near Cochran Hall. You can bring your own lunch or reserve a box lunch by choosing from the following:
